A day for Earth
My New York Times daily newsletter reminded me that today was Earth day with a blunt first sentence. I opened the email and immediately read:
Good morning. It’s Earth Day.
Then immediately into daily news.
An interesting shift I thought. But then I remembered how social media would blow up today with people sharing beautiful photos of places around the world they’ve been, and that made me smile. While the world might be at war and congress stuck in gridlock, I’m glad that we have a day to honor the place we call home. Some of my friends and family told me today what they love most about our planet.
The sun - Ella
The fact that I share it with you - Lucy
I love that God created it in such silent beauty and majesty and that it’s so intricately woven together and self sustaining - Olivia
The bodies of water & the animals - Luke
How all of creation displays God’s glory - Ellie
That God created it & chose it for us - My mama
My friend Addison had a simple one-word answer: squirrels.
When the night cools off from a warm day, and it’s cool but not cold. And when the birds chirp early in the morning and settle late at night. And when the sun rises without fail each morning, some days with colors so bright you feel like a minuscule dot in space & time. And the breeze against your cheek and through your hair. Peace and joy in your heart when you’re all alone with trees swaying above you. Crispy leaves in the fall and sweet snow that blankets the ground. Ocean waves that swallow you up, and the sweet smell of corn on a summer drive. Those are things I love about Earth! What about you?
Happy Earth Day,
Meg
